Codes and conventions of a horror film that feature within my open two minutes

One very popular setting of horror films are woods and dark places, this is where the whole of my open two minutes are set. I have done this as i feel that setting the open two minutes in a mysterious  place sets out the film itself to be seen to the viewer as mysterious, meaning that it created excitement to watch the film unfold. The villain of a horror film can often be someone who is possessed. This is the villain in my film and is very popular to the target audience of horror films.
Vulnerable girls and drunken youths can be seen as a stereotype within the horror genre as its clear to see that this would be the start to a horrific and scary story so i feel this would be the perfect start to my film.

Possible settings
The setting we are hoping to archive is the darkness filled woods with a few candles and beer cans scattered across the floor. I am hoping this will help show the current light and fun situation that quickly turns dark and horrific when the story line unfolds.

Character List

Chris:
A 18 year old boy, he is the farther of the group as he protects them and ensures they are all safe. As the action starts he is the one who tries to keep everyone calm and safe and is the one everyone turns to.
Alex :
Alex is younger than Chris and is the first person to see the possessed girl. He is seen by everyone watching the film as slightly vulnerable and is in need of comfort after seeing the possessed girl.

Beth:
Beth is the first victim of the possessed girl in the movie. She is freaked out by her missing bracelet that is now found, she then is lost from the group and later found dead.

Harriet:
Harriet is in this scene two subvert the stereotype of women. she is brave strong and takes a leading role on side with Chris.

Brandy:
Brandy is the shy one within the group although she is present in the scene she doesn't say anything but shows good body language that she is scared.

Elvira:
This means mistress of the dark that really portrays her character that is a girl who is possessed and full of evil.

Suggested prop list:
Beat speaker where the youths play their music, bear cans scattered across the floor. lightly lit candles, bracelet, outfits of characters.

Opening shot
The opening shot of the scene will be an extreme wide shot to show the full extent of the mise-en-scence i am trying to portray with in the film.

Mise-en-scene:
The settings of my film will be at a dark forest. there will be bear cans scatted across the floor and lightly light candles. The body language of the cast changes from confident to scared and vulnerable.

My initial ideas

    Narrative:
A group of friends are getting drunk  in the woods. One friend come back after going back from toilet saying that he just saw a girl who looks possessed in the woods. They then start  recording what they see if a funny moment when their friend freaking out . However, when they go to investigate they find that there is only one of the girls in groups expensive bracelet that she thought  see lost when see was a child in a dream. see turns round to friends to confirm what she has just seen. When she tells them the story of her horrific dream as a child. unconvinced of her story they turn back to their hangout in the woods, this is when the hear a snap of twig although no one is around. looking down to see the bracket has disappeared. further on in their journey back to their hangout they see an outline of what looks like a teenage girl and in her right hand was the bracket they had seen moments ago. Huddles together they realize that one friend is missing. feeling the affects of the alcohol in the humid air their instincts tell them to run when they see the possessed girls face when then they fall over what they believe to be a tree but when looking down see its the dead body of their friend that had gone missing. this is when they realize that what is happening is not effects from the drugs they are taking.

The genre of my film is horror, i feel that horror constantly has viewers on the edge of their seat and this is something i want to create for the viewers of my film.

Target Audience:
The target audience of my film would both male and female that are 15+. This is because my film is based on horror. My film is set in a creepy place where creepy things take place, this sets a clear target audience as it creates the stereotype of a horror film. Both male and female will relate to this film as their are both male and female characters they could relate to or friends of theirs share similarity too.

Possible main characters:
There is one clear main character in the opening two minutes of my film and that is the possessed girl that is found within the woods. She is given prevalence as she makes an attack on the group of drunken youths showing that she is a important character within the film.

the proposal narrative analysis

The Proposal
A pushy boss forces her young assistant to marry her in order to keep her Visa status in the U.S. and avoid deportation to Canada. She is unpopular with all her employers and she including her young assistant. However he begins to fall in love with her as she shows her soft side at his parents’ home in Alaska. They become close when he saves her live and an awkward yet funny scene where they bump into each other naked.

He could be seen as a stereotype of a male within a romance as he is smart attractive and very sensitive to others feelings, however The boss subverts to the stereotype of the female within a romance, she is mean and has no desire to fall in love but towards the end of the film she start to show that she is gentle and has a hard wall built to hide the fact that she is so vulnerable and when her young assistant sees this he can’t help but fall in love with her.

Conventions of Romance

 Codes and conventions of romance

Character
In a romance in most cases you have an overbearing father who disapproves of his daughter’s lover despite any efforts the love interests does to keep the father on side. The women In the romance at the beginning of the film is either unable to love or doesn't want love and then is over whelmed with emotion that she has fallen in love tries to ignore this feeling but end up accepting love. Or the women has given up on love she has been treated bad in the past or their true love has past but then meets their knight in shinning amour they thought didn't exist. In some cases the love interest is head over heels with the female but has to fight to get her attention or the male finds the character annoying or even hates her but then at the end of the film is completely in love with the film.
Narrative:
The female in some cases in romance starts of in a relationship with a possessive creep. Following her heart and not her head, she will then find out that this man has been cheating on her and ends it with him and later on finding love. The boy in some cases could have already been in a relationship with the girl but then finds her again many years later as they fall back in love,  in some cases the female has several bad relationships when finally realizing her true love has been with her all along and falls in love with her best friend.
Theme:
Love is always separated in some way in the middle or near end of film. Sometimes the true love within the story happens on misfortune that frequently brings two overs together. The story is genuinely built on the fact that prince charming does exist but however shows that love is not all good but an obstacle course. In some causes there is a love triangle and seeing who the person will choose. Lastly romance depend on the traditional belief that opposites attract.
Sound:

Introduction to a romance in genuinely non- diegetic sound, romantic, violin, piano. It usually sets the mood of the film.

conventions of an action film

open two minutes of harry potter deathly hallows part 1 analysis

Genre:
The genre of this film predominantly fantasy as presented in one of the first scenes showing Hermione with a magic wand as she casts a spell on her parents. There is also a shot where the images on the newspaper are moving which doesn't happen in reality.  This can be inciting for the audience as it creates a new world for them and they can feel intrigued. The film in also and action and adventure film as a lot happens however the very first two minutes don’t show much action. Who ever has watched the previous films will know what they are like therefore the suspense that something bad is going to happen to harry is even more daunting.

Narrative:
Finally the villain is at large which shows fear and creates a role change; the most powerful people in the films change to be weak and powerless. To start with you can see a man talking about the disaster that has occurred. There is fear in his eyes that make the audience feel nervous about what is happening.  When we can finally see who he is talking to there is a large audience of people listening intently. He finishes talking and all at once they all take photos of him with large piercing flashes.  He seems very powerful as he is above the others and is not crowded within them.  There is also a scene where Hermione is in her bedroom and her mother shouts up to her, her reply sounds very apprehensive which suggests that she is afraid of what is going on.

Lighting:
The lighting has also significantly changed as it is very dark and cynical in this film compared to all the others where the lighting is much brighter. This automatically makes the audience wonder whether there is something bad going to happen. Before this film the ministry seemed like a magical place however because it is dark it changes the atmosphere. Although the last words that he says is “we remain strong!” the fear, darkness and worry forces the audience not to believe it.

Sound:
At the start of the film there is non diegetic sounds as the man is talking, His voice is very draining and serious as if he was upset but doesn't want to show it. After the speech some diegetic sounds are introduced for example some solemn music started to play that  gave the impression something bad was happening. As the film progressed the tempo of the music progressed building tension and fear. A few times there was speech that overlapped the music however the music was the main source of sound the whole way through.

Camera angles in first scene:
At the start of the film there is non diegetic sounds as the man is talking, His voice is very draining and serious as if he was upset but doesn't want to show it. The 180 rule:
In film making. the 180-degree rule is a basic guideline regarding the on-screen relationship between a character and another character or object within a scene. The 180 degree rule is essential in keeping the viewer focused and avoiding confusion.

Once a scene has been established, the camera must stay on one side of the action. If two people are facing each other, a line must be drawn. This line usually runs straight down the middle between the two people. Once this line is in place, the camera can move anywhere providing it stays on the same side of the line once filming has begun. If the camera is switching between two faces during a conversation for example and then suddenly cuts to the other side of the line, then it will appear that both people are facing the same direction instead of looking at each other.

The 30 degrees rule
This is a basic film editing guideline.  That says the camera must moves 30 degrees between shots.   If this rule isn't followed a jump cut occurs and there is a risk that the audience starts focusing on the filming technique instead of the story that is being narrated.

Match on action
This is a clever way of editing action shots to intrigue the audience.  The editor cuts from one shot to another view that matches the first shot's action. Although the two shots may have actually been shot hours apart from each other, cutting on action gives the impression of continuous time when watching the edited film. This is a simple thing to do but is so effective and is very important that this is done properly.  If this is not done correctly the whole shot will look tacky and very noticeable to the audience watching.

Orange is the new black stereotypes
Orange is the new black is An American TV Drama series that was released on Netflix in 2013 and the second series being released in June this year 2014. This TV Drama is about a women’s prison and the stereotypical and non- stereotypical roles that occur within a prison. It shows a scene of community in the prison and that everyone has someone they can turn to and all though it does portray the stereotype of prison being a tough and scary place also shows that the people in there are not a cast of in society and that everyone can change for the better, it shows a journey of women finding who they truly are and adapting who they are so that they can survive this life in prison.
One character in Orange is the new Black is ‘RED’ she is essentially the ‘top dog’ the person who runs the prison on the side of prisoners. She is who all the other women look up too, if they show her loyalty she will take care of them however if you upset her or cross her she will ensure that your time in prison is miserable until you prove yourself to her. She however doesn't follow the typical stereotype in other ways she is very anti-drugs and help all people within her group of drugs and all though she has a system in bringing in contraband to help her status she refuses to have drugs with in her prison and those who take drugs she will reject from her group leave them on their own to suffer not as an act of cruelty but an act of love to ensure that they get of drugs.
Another character I find very stereotypical in this TV Drama is ‘Alex Vause’ although she doesn't look like the stereotypical drug smuggler she can be portrayed as a stereotypical lipstick lesbian, a mean girl that girls gay or straight can’t help but fancy with both her charm, the way she only opens up to them and her amazing looks.  ‘Boo’ is also a stereotype for lesbians.

Piper Chapman is a very complex character in the way I can’t summarize her to a specific stereotype, she is intelligent and very responsible however has a extreme wild side witch could resemble a rebellious women on the outset of a rich and strict family, She falls in love with her first true love all over again whilst she is in prison and is seen as someone who is week for ‘Alex Vause’ who is portrayed as the superior in their relationship in scene where she is always the one chasing Alex yet when she is shown with her current finance it’s the complete opposite, meaning its safe to say that she is complex and diverse character.

Never back down film and trailer analysis

Never back down- film and trailer analysis
Never back down is about a boy At his new high school, a rebellious teen Jake Tyler is lured into an ultimate underground fighting club in a Backyard Fight, where he finds a mentor in a mixed martial arts veteran. After receiving threats to the safety of his friends and family, Jake seeks the mentoring of a veteran fighter, to train his mind and body for one final no-holds-barred elimination fight with his unrelenting personal nemesis and local martial arts champion Ryan McCarthy.
This film is directed by Jeff Wadlow he has produced several other successful films such as the kick ass films this is also a fighting based film and this shows he has a way of making fights interesting and thrilling for the audience. However he is not mentioned on the poster as it is more focused on the film itself.
The release date is on the poster as in theaters March 2008  and this will be because this is when fighting seasons are near end so people will be wanting to watch fighting. The casting for the this film is very good with actress Amber Heard who plays a hot love interest in many action style films such as Rum Diary, Mandy Lane, Drive Angry these are all films that are targeted to males and so is this film so using her will help to attract the target audience. Also Cam Gigandet who is again shown in many action type films such as Twilight, fight for survival and the experiment this shows he’s good at playing a fighting character and in all these films he plays the bad guy so his role in this film will be just as good.
The film company of this film is summit entertainment. This company has produced films such as Divergent, the Twilight saga, RED, Warm bodies, Man on a ledge, these are all films of which are very popular to the fans of Action, thriller and adventure. With the film never back down holds in every aspect. This means that people who like this company and the film that this company produce then having this company producing this film will make them want to watch it.
This film made a massive amount of the money that was $24,850,922. This shows thee film had a great success.  It also shows that the film was good to have had such a high success rate.
The poster of the film shows that the film will contain a lot of action. It also shows the main characters of the film, this is most properly because they want to show the cast of the film as the fans of each actor will watch the film because they are in the actual film. There is also a love interest shown in the film this will help to bring in female to watch the film as it shows that romance will be portrayed within the film.
The image of the trailer is of a new boy entering a school after being kick out of his previous school for fighting and then romance in action.  This is as they want to portray more aspects as it will draw in more people to want to buy or watch the film.
There is a specific sport interest in this film and that is UFC, street fighting. This is a very popular sport and that itself appeal and attract people to watch this film.
The camera angles in this trailer are generally wide and zooming out this is to show the tension within the fights in the film, drawing people into watching the film.
It’s mainly a voice and no music in the trailer. It is saying parts of the film nut doesn't give to much away and it’s this along with the secrecy of the poster that draws an audience into the film making them want to watch it.

I think the poster and trailer of the film never back down is effective because it helps sell the movie. The list of big actor, the camera angles, the sound. They all work together to attract the target audience, try to appeal to those who are not within the target audience.
